The NPTC Level 2 Award in Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross-cutting is a nationally recognised qualification designed for anyone who needs to use a chainsaw professionally for ground-based work.

This course covers the safe use of a chainsaw for cutting branches and timber that are already safely positioned on the ground and need to be processed into manageable lengths or logs. It does not cover tree felling, climbing or aerial chainsaw use.

  • Identify faults, damage and common problems
  • Prepare the work area and timber safely
  • Start, operate and stop a chainsaw safely
  • Cross-cut branches and timber that are safely positioned on the ground
  • Use appropriate cutting techniques while avoiding tension, compression, kickback and trapped saws
  • Stack and handle processed timber safely
  • Follow the correct health and safety and emergency procedures

Successful candidates will gain an NPTC Level 2 Certificate of Competence, demonstrating their ability to maintain and use a chainsaw safely for professional ground-based cross-cutting work.

Day 3: Independent Assessment

The assessment is carried out by an independent NPTC assessor.
